Khumbu Filming Academy
The Khumbu Filming Academy will train both young men and women from Khumjung and nearby villages on the professional use of a video camera. Once trained they will be able to offer their skills to trekkers and video-document their adventure – an added value to an unforgettable experience. While this provides the Sherpa Videographers with an opportunity for additional income, they can also use these skills to record and preserve their culture - their songs, their dances, their language, and the unique facets of their lives.
High Altitude Sherpas with various mountaineering expeditions will also be trained to video-record their climbs. Their footage will be compiled to present their story through their eyes and in their words.
The first batch of 10 students will receive a 15-day basic training on video filming in Kathmandu. Once the Filming Academy is operational instructors from Kathmandu will trek to Khumjung Village and conduct a hands-on course on basic technical requirements for good video-filming and video production. Students will complete a course on the theory of video filming, research, preparing a storyboard, script and narration, as well as compiling a short video fillers using skills gained from their training.
The launch of the courses is expected to be during the Khumbu Festival at Khumjung Village on 19th June 2009.
